Abstract
The purpose of the present paper is to determine the characteristics of stylistic and semantic design of scientific articles written in the English language within the economic discourse. This study investigated the terms ‘economic discourse’, ‘scientific article’ and its basic structural components. Social and economic transformations, the transition to innovative development model and joining of Ukraine to the European educational area requires from future international economists not only professional knowledge and skills but also knowledge of a foreign language as a means of global communication as well as the skills to form and process the data. This task is realized through forming students’ discourse competence, which is considered as unity of knowledge and skills, and also ways of activities related to the design and contextual understanding of discourses as objects of real activities in the course of professional practice. Discourse competence includes skills at using relevant methods of designing the text, skills at using means of communication, and application of genre and structural elements of language. Economic discourse is defined as a combination of language acts used during the determination and characterization of economic processes. Purposes and participants are considered to be the main features of economic discourse. The main genres of economic discourse may be scientific articles, informative and analytical articles, economic news, reports, business letters, releases of forums | conferences and etc., as well as the main types of economic discourse may be comments, advertisement, instructions, descriptions, explanations, arguments, graphics and diagrams, maps, tables, schemes. The term ‘scientific article’ is considered as completed speech construction, containing contextual, structural and grammatical cohesion, that is realized in oral or written form of speech. Given the styles and sub-styles of scientific articles the findings showed that two groups of articles are distinguished: 1) economic texts of publicist style; 2) economic texts of academic style. From these findings it may be stated that the articles of both styles are characterized by cohesion and various types of lexical, grammatical, logical and stylistic discourse connection. The analysis also demonstrated that scientific article is a means of communication in the field of science, characterized by advance understanding of the utterance, by monologue features, fixed selection of figures of speech and tendency to terminology.
